You can apply to 100 jobs online and hear nothing back. Meanwhile, someone with half your qualification just got hired. How?
They found the job before it existed.
Recruiters and hiring managers in South Africa will tell you the same thing: a large share of positions are filled through referrals, internal moves and direct approaches — before an advert ever goes up. If you’re only fighting in the visible market, you’re competing against thousands. In the hidden market, you’re competing against five.
1. Tell Everyone — Specifically
“I’m looking for a job” gets nods. “I’m a bookkeeper with 3 years’ experience looking for a role in manufacturing or logistics in Joburg — do you know anyone hiring?” gets names. Be specific about what you do and what you want. Your neighbour, your church, your cousin at that company — the hidden market runs on ordinary people making connections.
2. Contact Employers Directly
Make a list of 20 companies you’d genuinely want to work for. Find the hiring manager or HR contact. Send a short, respectful message: who you are, the value you bring, and ask one question — are they hiring now or soon, or do they expect to be. Most will ignore you. One will reply. That’s how the hidden market opens.
3. Work Your Networks on Purpose
LinkedIn is not a job board — it’s a room full of hiring managers. Comment with substance on posts from your industry. Share what you’re learning. When a position opens quietly, the people who’ve seen your name for months think of you first.
4. Do Something Visible
Adverts sort CVs. The hidden market sorts proof. A short project, a certificate, a portfolio piece, a problem you solved and can explain — these are what get mentioned when a manager asks a colleague “know anyone good?”
5. Follow Up Like a Professional
The hidden market rewards patience. Someone says “nothing right now” — message them again in six weeks. Most people never do. Being the person who follows up politely is its own qualification.
The Honest Truth
The hidden market isn’t about connections you were born with. It’s about doing the unglamorous work most job seekers skip — asking specifically, contacting directly, following up consistently. That’s the entire advantage.
While thousands apply to the same 50 adverts this week, a handful of people are getting hired into roles that never got posted. Be one of them.
