Chartered Accountant (CA)

Chartered Accountancy remains one of South Africa’s most respected and stable career choices. With skills shortages in auditing, financial management and public sector finance, the CA path continues to attract learners who are strong in Maths and enjoy working with numbers, systems and business rules.

School subjects

Subject choices in Grade 9 are the first step toward qualifying as a Chartered Accountant.

Required subjects include:

• Mathematics
• English

Accounting is not compulsory at school level but is strongly recommended.
Mathematical Literacy is not accepted for CA study at universities.

Marks needed

Chartered Accountancy programmes have strict entry standards.

Typical minimum requirements are:

• Mathematics. 65 to 75 percent
• English. 60 percent or higher
• Accounting. 60 percent or higher if taken
• APS score. 30 to 38 depending on the university

Learners with higher Maths marks are more competitive during selection.

Where to study

To become a CA in South Africa, learners must follow a programme accredited by the South African Institute of Chartered Accountants.

Universities offering accredited CA programmes include:

• University of Cape Town
• University of the Witwatersrand
• Stellenbosch University
• University of Pretoria
• University of Johannesburg
• North West University
• University of the Free State
• Rhodes University

Some private institutions offer accredited bridging or postgraduate programmes but undergraduate study usually takes place at public universities.

Study time and qualification

The CA route is structured and regulated.

• Bachelor’s degree in Accounting or Commerce. 3 years
• Postgraduate Certificate in Accounting or Honours. 1 year
• SAICA training contract. 3 years

After completing professional exams, candidates earn the Chartered Accountant designation.

Extra requirements

Students should expect several assessment stages.

These include:

• University entrance requirements and selection processes
• SAICA Initial Test of Competence and Assessment of Professional Competence
• Full time workplace training at an accredited firm

Strong academic discipline and time management are essential during training.

Other careers with the same subjects

The same subject choices allow entry into many business and finance roles.

Options include:

• Financial Manager
• Management Accountant
• Auditor
• Tax Practitioner
• Business Analyst
• Investment Analyst
• Risk and Compliance Officer

These careers may follow different professional bodies or study routes.
