But, What If I Don’t Qualify for University?

Societal norms dictate that once you finish high school, you usually end up going on to study the field of your choice at a university or college. But, what happens if that dream seems out of reach? We all know that varsity fees are exorbitant, and, for some, going to university is just not possible.

Is there a way to still be successful if you don’t have the marks or the funds to go to university? And what are some of the career choices available?

There is hope, and in this article we tackle the challenges of finding a job and becoming successful when you don’t have the means to go to university.

“He who is not courageous enough to take risks will accomplish nothing in life.” – Muhammad Ali

Once you’ve completed high school, it’s perfectly normal to wonder about what comes next. For many, university is the next step, but for others, especially those who do not have the marks or the money for university, this “wondering” can quickly turn to panic about what they will do to make their money and become successful.

The first thing we want you to know is that your marks, those numbers on a report, do not define who you are. These numbers might reflect your academic abilities, but do not tell anyone anything about who you are, what you are capable of, and whether or not you will be successful. That, dear reader, is up to you and you alone.

Life is all about taking risks, right? So why not use what you have to take a risk and possibly turn it into a success?

Success is what you make of it. Read those words again.

Your success in life does not depend on whether or not you go to university, or get a degree, or follow the path that society has set for you. Did you know that some of the most successful people in the world never went to university? Don’t believe me?

Well, here are a few:

  1. Steve Jobs: The co-founder of Apple Inc Steve Jobs only went to college for one semester before dropping out.
  • Richard Branson: Branson struggled with academics his whole life, and dropped out of school when he was only 16. He went on to found the Virgin Group.
  • Mark Zuckerberg: As you know, Mark Zuckerberg created Facebook. But, did you know that he dropped out of Harvard?

These are just three of the most successful people in the world who created their own success without any tertiary education. And, if this teaches you anything, it should be that your success does not need to be defined by your education.

Alternative Career Choices

The trick to creating your own success is to focus on what you are good at, and keep improving on your skills. Sure, you won’t be a doctor, but you can easily make your own money by using what you have,

Here are a few alternative career choices that you should consider:

1.    Freelancing

If you have a skill like writing, graphic design, programming, or social media management, you can offer your services as a freelancer. Freelancing is a great option for making great money and building your portfolio. Websites like Upwork, Fiverr, and Freelancer.com can help you get started and connect you with clients looking for specific skills. And the best part? You don’t need a degree.

2.    Apprenticeships

Join an apprenticeship program in a trade like plumbing or electrical work. These programs allow you to learn a trade with no higher education requirements. What could be better than hands-on experience while you earn a salary?

3.    Entrepreneurship

A simple idea can lead to a successful business. If you have a business idea, consider starting your own small business. From selling products to offering tutoring services, you can do what you love while earning money.

4.    Vocational Training

Cosmetology school, culinary school, and even IT programs are great stepping stones on your way to your career success. These options very rarely require more than your matric certificate, and offer great options as career choices. Look at vocational schools in your area and choose the option that suits you best.

These are only a few of the options that you should think about. There are, of course, many more available if you take the time to do your research and use the skills that you have to become successful.

Final Thoughts

Life isn’t just about following a traditional path, or meeting certain expectations. It’s about using your unique skills, talents, and passions to carve out your own journey. As we’ve already mentioned, university does not have to be the only option, and there are countless opportunities you can explore to make good money and be successful.

From freelancing and apprenticeships to vocational training and starting your own business, success really is what you make of it. So, focus on what you know, learn your true passions, and carve out your own success in life. You’ve got this!
